Title:
The Patriot
Legnth of Listening/Watching:
2 Hours and 26 minutes
Summary:
South Carolina 1776, the story was about a family caught in the war between the Americans and
the British colonizer. Benjamin Martin was a captain during the wilderness campaign. During the assembly meeting of South Carolina, Benjamin Martin refuse to vote on the resolution that
South Carolina should join the eight colonies out of the thirteen who already declared war against
the british. His wife died and left seven children on his care. His patriotism was questioned before the assembly meeting but then the welfare of his children is foremost. Above all, there is
nothing more pressing as the life and future of his kids for there is no one but him alone have
the responsibility to rare and care them with the demise of his wife. But then the assembly
voted to go to war.
His son (gabriel, the eldest) joined the continental army against his(Benjamin) will. His other
son (Thomas) was shot and killed by the british officer for trying to protect his older brother
(Gabriel) who was to be hung for carrying a dispatch for the continental army. That prompted
Benjamin Martin to armed himself and fight back. With the help of his two sons , they killed
twenty british soldiers and rescued Gabriel. That incident make Benjamin change his mind
and joined the continental army. He was given the rank of colonel . Under his command was
a ragtag of militia's recruited from their village. His son Gabriel was transferred to his command.
The ensuing war, his militias inflicted so much damage to their enemy that the British command
ordered their army to hunt them down at all cost. However, his militias were elusive, the british
were not able to apprehend them. In desperate move, the red coats gathered the suspected
relatives of the militias at a church and burned them alive. Gabriel was killed by one of the british officer in one of the encounter. In one of the major battle, Benjamin Martin made a
heroic act that made the british army retreat.
At the end,the continental army won the battle. The british army was cornered near the sea
at Yorktown, Virginia in 1781. With the help from the french army the british surrenders. It was
a hard fought battle and patriotism that won the independence of the americans. Benjamin Martin returned to their town and rebuild his home and family. The slaves who served the army
were given their freedom.
Reaction:
I like this movie. Family first before patriotism. He became patriot only after his family has
suffered and endangered. Though Benjamin Martin love his country, his love of his family
comes first.
